The Ancient City of Gaochang is one of the best-preserved relics of ancient cities in China (the other is the ancient city of Jiaohe) and has been under the State’s protection.
Location
This ancient city stands in Gobi Desert, about 47 kilometers southeast of Turpan in Xinjiang Autonomous Region.
Function or value in the past
It was built to be a garrison in the ancient times.
History
The Ancient City of Gaochang was originally built in the 1st century BC with the name of Gaochang Wall. Later, it was renamed Kharakhja, Kocho and King City respectively. During the following dynasties, as an important stopover along the Silk Road, this city experienced several stages: Gaochang Prefecture, Gaochang Kingdom and the West Prefecture.
